RC drifters ready to make Brunei proud in KL

(L-R) G Birin, Mamatkubo and Lobo will all try to drift their 1/10 scaled RC vehicles to glory at the Nov 11-13 Yokomo International Drift Meet at the Tropicana Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.Picture: BT/ Melvin Jong

Thursday, November 3, 2011

FIVE Bruneians will be looking to slide their 1/10 scaled radio controlled (RC) vehicles to glory as they compete in the Nov 11-13 Yokomo International Drift Meet at the Tropicana Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Departing the Sultanate for the Malaysian capital today, this will be the second time the Bruneians compete in the event their first in the 2009 edition despite the racers already boasting impressive resumes of accolades in various international drift meets.

Lobo, a prominent figure in Brunei's RC community and one of the racers who will be flying the flag for the country, had driven to silver in the B-main of the 2009 meet.

He, along with his teammates, will be eyeing a semi-finals spot in this weekend's race.

Compatriot Mamatkubo, who finished two positions behind Lobo in 2009, told The Brunei Times that some 100 racers from across the region as well as Japan will be competing at this year's meet, 40 more than that of 2009, making this year's edition of the race more challenging.

Another notable name in Brunei's contingent is G Birin who occupied the top of the podium in Kota Kinabalu's drift meet held on Sept 19. Completing the list of Bruneian racers are Alvin and Fadil, both active RC drifters in the Brunei community.

Asked what are some of the challenges they are expecting, Mamatkubo replied that the Brunei contingent is going into the tournament with limited knowledge of the track layout and race rules.

"The judges are Masami Hirosaka and Takahiro Ueno and they will decide on the rules," he said.

Hirosaka is a Japanese radio controlled car driver who is considered to be the world's most successful with a record fourteen IFMAR World Championships.

Ueno, meanwhile, is a Japanese professional drifting driver, currently competing in the D1 Grand Prix.

Mamatkubo added that the drift vehicles are also now different from that of 2009. The vehicles will no longer be tuned to the 50/50 class (equal power distribution to the front and rear wheels) but to the counter-steer category where more power is transferred to the rear wheels, making the cars behave more like their real life counterparts.

The driver who trains daily at Tungku Link's CH Hobbies used the opportunity to state that more support from both the Government and non-government organisations are required to help the hobby grow and progress in Brunei.

"We need support such as the preparation of facilities and organising of events," he said, adding that the RC drift community is steadily growing in Brunei. The Brunei Times

Wirawan stops Chu from repeating a double

Racers competing during Sunday's fourth round of the 2011 Pemkar Electric National Series race at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas. Pictures: BT/ Melvin Jong

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

BRUNEI'S very own Wirawan stepped up to the plate to prevent Sabah's KS Chu from repeating a double in last Sunday's fourth round of the 2011 Pemkar Electric National Series race at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

The winner of both the Justock and Open Modified class of the race's first series back in early April, Chu looked set to do the same last weekend but Wirawan would deny the Malaysian by racing his 1/10 scale radio control (RC) vehicle to the top spot in the Open Modified class.

Chu had started off the first heat of the Open Modified final brightly, outpacing everyone including top qualifier Wirawan but the Bruneian would come back strongly to win the second and third heat to secure his first place finish.

G Zoff rounded up the final spot on the podium behind Chu.

Four different categories were competed on the day, the Open Modified class was hands down the fastest of the lot where racers can choose to use any Electronic Speed Control (ESC) and motor they desire, propelling their vehicles to break-neck speeds.

Next came the Justock class where the organisers had put a restriction on the type of ESC and motor used to level the playing field to provide for better racing.

There was no stopping Chu in this class, his aggressive driving ensuring that he would return to Sabah with a gold.

Adib and top qualifier Keeman were forced to settle for second and third place respectively.

Consistency was the name of the game as top qualifier Hazmi managed to keep out of trouble to win the Pro-Stock category whereby the motor is controlled but the ESC is not, bumping up the speed and skill level from the previous class.

The racer from Kuala Belait was followed in hot pursuit by G Zoff and Lobo who finished second and third.

Also competed on the day was the Drift category, where the RC vehicles will don special tyres to allow the cars to break traction and slide sideways on the track, shifting the emphasis on the vehicle set-ups from speed to control and technique.

Unsurprisingly top qualifier Faiq was quickest of the lot with Hasree and Faris following closely behind.

During an earlier interview, race operator Edwin Sim had informed The Brunei Times that the series was just the second of its kind ever organised in Brunei.

The manager of the RC Model Department of Guan Hock Lee explained that the series, comprising six different races, was hoped to give local racers something to look forward to throughout the entire year, as opposed to just a one-off race. The Brunei Times

What a weekend! The 50th Shizuoka Hobby Show was just held in Japan from 5/12 to 5/15. This marked an incredible five decades of celebrating plastic model kits, radio controlled cars, airsoft guns, model railroads, and all manner of fun time killers in-between. An area of Japan long affiliated with artisans and crafts, scenic Shizuoka City prides itself as being “the world capital of models”. And seeing as how Bandai currently makes “The Shizz” the home of their Gundam plastic model kit factory (AKA the Bandai Hobby Center), it’s a claim they can back up. The official event poster below should give you a basic idea of what’s on the agenda…

A YOUTH Park is to be developed by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports which will act as a venue for the youth to conduct their favourite activities such as skateboarding, remote control cars and musical performances.

Planned to be located in front of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, the $982,213 Youth Park is the government's answer to youth associations that have previously pleaded for an official venue for their interests.

In an interview, Hjh Norlah Hj Yaakub, Acting Director of Youth and Sports Development said that it was in the interest of the ministry to deliver such facilities to meet the recreational needs of youth in a proper and organised manner.

Through the establishment of the Youth Park and the accessibility of the facilities, youth-related associations, for example of the Remote Control Cars (RCC), will be able to carry out their competitions locally as opposed of having them travel to distant destinations such as Miri.

The main facilities of the park will be a Skatepark, an RCC track and a stage that can be used for musical performances. The facilities were decided based on popular demand from the youth associations.

"Hopefully, it will encourage the youth to take part in these remote control car (or skateboard) activities to fill in their spare time in a beneficial manner," she said.

At approximately 200 square metres, or the equivalent of two football fields, the park will be able to accommodate "hundreds" of people, said Hj Norlah. She did not rule out that it could accommodate 1,000.

In addition to its development, the Department of Youth and Sports will also be looking into the maintenance and cleanliness management of the park with the assistance of the voluntary youth associations in the Sultanate.

Present during yesterday's ceremony was Permanent Secretaries Dato Paduka Hj Jemat Hj Ampal and Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar as well as Acting Permanent Secretary 1 Hj Mohd Hj Abd Rahman who received the contract for the development from a representative from Contractor Dorea Sdn Bhd.

Construction of the park will begin next month, with plans to complete it by April 2012. The Brunei Times
