TWENTY-SIX people were detained for loitering around the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium at around 2am yesterday during an operation conducted by the Berakas Police District. The operation dubbed "Operasi: Lepak" or "Operation: Loitering", headed by ASP Hj Azree Hj Abd Manap, District Crime Officer for Berakas Police Station, was aimed at reducing crime and potential criminal activities in the area which is considered one of the most active crime zones in the district.According to the police, the 26 people were among two groups that were caught loitering around the area after midnight. "Even after ample warning the two groups, one playing futsal and the other playing RC cars, still would not disperse, so we decided to take them in," said one of the Senior Officers in Charge of Berakas Police Station.Berakas Police Station has been conducting monitoring operations for several years now on locations that have been identified as problem areas in in Berakas, these include the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium and the new Lambak Kiri Industrial Site.During the operations seven cars were found violating traffic rules and regulations, out of which three had been modified and no road tax. The suspects detained were brought to Berakas District Police Station for further investigations, and to Ripas Hospital for urine and blood tests .According to the police involved in the operations, the location where the suspects were apprehended is considered an active crime zone. "Loitering and hanging around with a group of people consisting of five or more individuals after midnight is already considered an offence and being in an active crime place around that time doesn't really help them," said the officer.
